Mind reading: assuming you know what others think

Mind reading is deciding what someone else is thinking — usually something negative about you — without them having said it.

What mind reading sounds like

  • “They think I’m boring.”
  • “She’s annoyed with me, I can tell.”
  • “Everyone noticed I was nervous.”

Mind reading examples from everyday life

  • situation

A friend takes hours to reply.

    the thought

    “She’s annoyed with me.”

  • situation

    Someone yawns while you talk.

    the thought

    “I’m boring them.”

  • situation

Your manager is short with you in a meeting.

    the thought

    “They’re unhappy with my work.”

Why our minds do this

Reading people is a real skill, especially for empathetic thinkers. The trouble starts when a guess about someone’s mind is treated like a fact.

How to catch mind reading in the moment

  1. 1Write down two other explanations for what they did.
  2. 2Ask yourself what you actually saw or heard — not what you filled in.
  3. 3If it matters, ask them. One honest question replaces a story with an answer.

Which thinking styles it shows up in

Mind reading often comes with the Empathetic thinking style — usually as the flip side of a real strength.
